New Norcia Museum and Art Gallery

A little piece of Spain comes alive in this town, full of history, art and architecture. The town’s main attraction is the museum and art gallery. In the museum you will find extraordinary artefacts dating back to when New Norcia was an Aboriginal mission, a hub for farming and a diverse town for education and culture.

New Norcia Abbey Church and St Gertrude’s College

The Abbey Church is home to one of only two large Moser organs, originally crafted in Germany, this organ was imported to Australia in the 1920’s. Visit St Gertrude’s College, a grand gothic style building which was originally built as a girls boarding school and opened in 1908.

Nambung National Park

Home to the iconic Pinnacles Desert, Nambung National Park features an array of coastal dunes. Rich in flowering plants, this is a great spot where vegetation blooms in to flowers during the season.

Pinnacles Desert

These mystical limestone pillars make up one of Australia’s most unique landscapes, rising eerily out of the sand and reaching up to several metres tall. See the Pinnacles from the lookout over the park or take a guided walk through these amazing spires. If time permits be sure to make a visit to the Pinnacle Desert Discovery Centre to discover even more about these natural wonders.

Wildflowers (Seasonal)

Stop to view wildflowers throughout the tour whilst they are in season. Varieties include the orange flowering Christmas Tree, Kangaroo Paw, Banksia, Wattle and Everlastings.

Description

On our way to the Pinnacles Desert, we travel through the Swan Valley to New Norcia.  As Australia’s only monastic town, it is renowned for its Benedictine Abbey and art collection.  The Abbey Church is home to a large “Moser organ”, crafted in Germany and imported to New Norcia in the 1920’s.  A little piece of Spain comes alive in this town, full of history, art and architecture. In the town’s museum you will find extraordinary artefacts dating back to when New Norcia was an Aboriginal mission and a hub for farming, education and culture.

You will learn of the intriguing history and culture of the community before stopping for morning tea.  We visit a produce shop for the chance to purchase Benedictine Community goods including olive oil, fruit, wine, nut cake and breads.   From here we visit the Western Wildflower Farm for a brief talk about how wildflowers are dried and exported. Wildflower varieties include the orange flowering Christmas Tree, Kangaroo Paw, Banksia, Wattle and Everlastings. Wildflowers are seasonal (September to November) and therefore we cannot guarantee sightings in nature.

Following lunch, we visit lobster fishing town of Cervantes and the Pinnacles Desert.  Here you can enjoy an easy paced walk through  mystical limestone pillars rising eerily out of the sand and reaching up to several metres tall.   See the Pinnacles from the lookout and take a guided walk through these amazing spiers. If time permits be sure to make a visit to the Pinnacle Desert Discovery Centre to discover even more about these natural wonders.
