Coober Pedy

Coober Pedy is the major producer of opals in the world today. These bizarrely multicoloured gems were first found here in 1915 and continue to be mined here today, making it a perfect place to pick up a truly Aussie souvenir! Coober Pedy is also famous for its strange housing style. People here live underground! Sounds crazy, but its the best way to escape the desert heat in the day and the freezing cold nights. You could be mistaken for thinking you're on the moon, due to the weird landscape (which is great for photos)!
